Tartine Bakery is one of San Francisco’s most celebrated bakeries. It sits on the corner of Guerrero and 18th Street in the Mission District, a few steps from Dolores Park. Bakers Elisabeth Prueitt and Chad Robertson opened it in 2002, and their country loaf helped spark the modern wave of naturally leavened bread across the country.
The pastry case is the main draw. The morning bun is the one most people come for: flaky, buttery laminated dough rolled with cinnamon, sugar and orange zest. Croissants, frangipane tarts, lemon bars, éclairs and slices of cake fill out the counter, along with seasonal fruit tarts that change through the year.
Savory options include toasted sandwiches like the croque monsieur and pressed sandwiches served with house pickles, plus quiche and other baked items that make an easy lunch. Coffee, espresso drinks and tea are available to go with your pastry.
The famous country bread sells out fast, so arrive early if you want a loaf. Lines often stretch out the door on weekend mornings, and seating inside is limited. Many visitors take their pastries to go and walk two blocks to Dolores Park.
