The Strand Bookstore at 828 Broadway is one of New York City’s most famous independent bookstores and a must-stop for readers, collectors, and visitors. Founded in 1927 by Benjamin Bass, it has stood at the corner of Broadway and East 12th Street for decades and is still run by the same family today.
Known for its “18 Miles of Books” slogan, the store now holds more than 23 miles of new, used, and rare titles across three and a half retail floors. Shoppers can browse everything from new releases and bargain carts out front to art books, classics, and hard-to-find used editions.
Collectors can visit the Rare Book Room for signed copies and first editions, and the Used Book Buying Desk buys books from the public Thursday through Saturday. Take a break at Cafe Fred, open daily inside the store. The building was named a New York City landmark in 2019.
The Strand sits just north of Union Square, a short walk from the 14th Street–Union Square subway station (4, 5, 6, L, N, Q, R, W trains). The main store is open daily from 10am to 9pm. Find hours, directions, and more details for this Manhattan bookstore right here on P6D.net.
