Powell’s City of Books on West Burnside Street is a must-visit destination for readers, collectors, and travelers in Portland, Oregon. Taking up an entire city block in the Pearl District, it is known as the world’s largest independent new and used bookstore, with more than one million books on its shelves.
The store spans about 68,000 square feet across three floors and nine color-coded rooms, divided into roughly 3,500 sections, so it’s easy to browse everything from bestsellers and local authors to hard-to-find used titles. Collectors can visit the Rare Book Room, home to autographed first editions and other valuable works.
Take a break at the Guilder Cafe, reachable through the Gold Room, for coffee, breakfast, sandwiches, and drinks. Powell’s also hosts frequent author events, and Kids’ Storytime runs every Saturday morning. The store is wheelchair and stroller accessible.
Located at the corner of NW 10th Avenue and West Burnside, Powell’s is easy to reach by the Portland Streetcar, MAX Red and Blue lines, and TriMet buses, all stopping within a block. There’s no dedicated parking lot, but bike racks are available on the north and east sides. Find hours, directions, and more details for this Portland bookstore right here on P6D.net.
