Ground Kontrol is Portland’s best-known classic arcade, set on NW 5th Avenue in the Old Town Chinatown neighborhood. You can spot it from down the block thanks to its bright blue storefront, the big “Ground Kontrol” letters across the front and the tall vertical “Arcade” sign.
Inside, two floors are packed with more than 100 arcade cabinets and pinball machines, from golden-age favorites like Pac-Man, Galaga and Donkey Kong to fighting games, rhythm games and modern pinball tables. The neon-lit space has the feel of a classic 1980s arcade, but with a full bar serving local beer, cocktails and snacks, which has made it a go-to spot for a fun night out in Portland.
Ground Kontrol is open to all ages during the day, then becomes 21 and over in the evening. On select nights it also hosts free-play sessions, tournaments, DJ nights and special events, so check the schedule before you go.
The arcade is close to MAX Light Rail stops and an easy walk from the Pearl District, Powell’s City of Books and Old Town’s bars and restaurants. Whether you want to chase a high score, relive your childhood or try pinball for the first time, it’s one of the most memorable things to do in downtown Portland.
