Ben’s Chili Bowl is a family-owned Washington, D.C. institution on U Street NW, famous for its chili half-smokes, chili dogs, and bowls of homemade chili. Founded in August 1958 by Ben and Virginia Ali, the restaurant has been serving the neighborhood for more than six decades and is still run by the Ali family today.

The restaurant occupies a building that once housed the Minnehaha, an early silent movie theater, and its bright red-and-yellow storefront with the “A Washington Landmark” sign is one of the most recognizable sights on U Street. Inside, a classic counter, booths, and walls lined with photos of famous visitors give the space a welcoming, old-school diner feel.

The signature dish is the chili half-smoke: a smoky, half-pork, half-beef sausage served on a warm steamed bun and topped with the restaurant’s spicy homemade chili, mustard, and onions. The menu also includes chili cheese fries, burgers, turkey and veggie dogs, breakfast plates, and milkshakes, making it an easy stop for a quick lunch or a late-night bite.

Over the years, Ben’s Chili Bowl has become a gathering place for locals, students, musicians, and visiting celebrities alike, and it is closely tied to the history of the U Street corridor, once known as “Black Broadway.” The restaurant sits right next to the historic Lincoln Theatre and is a short walk from the U Street Metro station.

Whether you’re a longtime Washingtonian or visiting the city for the first time, Ben’s Chili Bowl offers a true taste of local D.C. food culture, along with friendly service and a piece of neighborhood history in every visit.
